Type Of Flower I Grow From Seeds

We could not be happy without such dependable perennials as Peonies Iris and Phlox but it is great fun to try something new. I have been enjoying some hardy Primulas. They object to a hot and often dry climate for they much prefer it cool and moist. Some of them are at their best along a stream of water in light shade. Primula japonica likes such conditions but with a little extra watering, it did grow very well along a north foundation.
There are many varieties of Primulas some are evergreen and others lose their green leaves during the winter. Primula japonica belongs to the latter class. I planted seeds of it in a flat in March, watered well and set them outside to freeze. I was careful not to let the flat dry out and was rewarded by fine seedlings the latter part of April. As soon as the plants were of a size to be easily handled, I set them along the north foundation of my house. They grew very fast and I soon realized that I had planted them much too close together. Knowing that they appreciated moisture, I watered them frequently during the summer. I had fine big plants when the cold weather came. After the ground froze solid, an airy mulch was applied.
The plants made fine new growth in the spring. The largest crown was almost two feet in diameter. Finally buds could be seen deep in the center of the leaves. They grew rather slowly for an impatient soul but eventually opened a whorl of them around a stout stem.
Not being acquainted with flower, I supposed when all those buds had opened and faded that would be the end of their blooming but no, the stem grew in height and soon another tier a little higher up opened while those below went about their business of making seeds. The tallest stem grew 27 inches in height and had its sixth tier of flowers before it stopped blooming. Several plants sent up a second and a third stem not as lusty or tall as the first one but very good.
The colors were very pretty some a good rosy-pink, others a lighter pink and several plants had white flowers with a dark eye. The flowers were very attractive for many weeks. I felt well repaid for the extra watering they required.

The Best Tips For Digging

Digging and dividing an old Peony clump properly is an art and something to be learned by practice. If possible get someone who knows how to show you. If not, cut the tops close to the ground, then dig carefully, resisting the impulse to pry it out and perhaps breaking it in all the wrong places. Do not wash the soil from the roots for that makes it more brittle.
Lay it aside in the shade and cover with a sack until the soil reaches the crumbly stage. Then twist the root gently to see if there is a natural division and if so, follow that line. If there is none as sometimes happens, use a short stout knife to cut in such a way that each piece will have a good root with the standard 3 to 5 eyes.
However, do not sacrifice root system for a given number of eyes. Varieties differ as to the number of eyes they produce and some like Marie LeMoine, one of the best and dependable late whites, can hardly be cut into proper-sized divisions with more than 2 eyes good divisions are not made by number of eyes or length of root but by a balance between the two,
When the divisions are ready to plant, dig a hole much larger than the root. If it is in sod, save the piece of sod and either place it in the bottom of the hole upside down, chopping it well with the spade, or lay it aside to use later as a mulch upside down on the top of the Peony crown.
Plant the root with the buds up it has been done the other way, but without much success. Much has been said about deep planting causing Peonies to fail to bloom and while it is not recommended, I have found buds as deep as 6 ,inches on older plants and 4 inches is not at all uncommon. The rule is two inches of soil over the crown of the plant. My opinion is that lack of bloom is caused by failure to keep the plant growing it must make a new crown and roots just the same as a Tea Rose in order to bloom.
Fill around the root with good rich heavy loam (without manure) and with layer of sand over the top to sift in the holes made by the stems swaying in the spring winds. The sand keeps the air from getting to the roots, thereby avoiding crown rot. Mulch the first winter and. watch to see that the soil does not Wash off’ and leave the crown exposed. More soil and sand can be added whenever necessary.

Grafting is not hard to do. The easiest to make and best known and most practical form of it, for general use, is the cleft graft. No matter how many forms grafting may take – the Romans are said to have had 50 – the fundamental principle underlying all is that of uniting the cambium of the cion with that of the stock so that food supplies can be conducted from the one to the other.
For it is through the cambium layer that a tree is fed, and if the cambium of the cion can he united with that of the stock, food will flow up into the Lion and it will grow just as if it had never been cut away from its original source of supply.
The cambium is the green layer between bark and wood. As viewed in the top of a stock about to be grafted early in the season, it is not sharply defined but is rather indefinite; at that time the grafter has to do a good deal of estimating as to just where the cambium is.
Nevertheless, that is the best time for the cleft graft because under those conditions the bark sticks tight to the wood – an essential for the cleft graft. Later in the season – generally about midspring – the cambium presents a definite line, and that indicates that the bark is likely to slip and, if it does, the cleft grafting season is over.
Now for the tools to do the job. Common carpentry tools can be used but for the man who wants the pleasure and convenience of the right thing there are four items lie will enjoy: a good grafting mallet, a grafting chisel with a high quality white handle (so it is easy to find), a horticultural knife, and a wedge for stocks that are too small for the wedge on the grafting chisel.

Where Is The Most Extensive Floras In The World Found?

One of the richest and most extensive floras in the world is found in our southern Appalachian Mountains. It is one of the oldest land areas on earth, and the home of Shortia galacifolia, Oconee-bells. In these ancient hills grow the world’s finest azaleas and rhododendrons. Pinkshell azalea, Azalea vaseyi, flame azalea, A. calendulacea, sweet azalea, A. arborescens, and other less common species clothe the upland “balds,” the wooded slopes and the ravines with a riot of color, and compete for attention with the Carolina rhododendron, Rhododendron carolinianum, Piedmont rhododendron, R. minus, the brilliant Catawba rhododendron, R. calawbiense, and the later flowering rosebay rhododendron, R. maximum.
Here, too, the mountain laurel, Kalmia latifolia, reaches its greatest development, often attaining a height of 30 or even 40 feet; a fine specimen with an amazing trunk diameter of 37 inches was only recently found in Soco Gap on the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina.
A host of other choice ornamentals are native to this floral wonderland. Drooping leucothoe, Leucothoe cateebaei, arches its flower-studded branches over mountain streams, while galax, Galax aphylla, carpets hundreds of acres of woodland floor and mountain clearings, with its glossy heart-shaped leaves, from which delicate slender white flower spikes rise like fairy wands.
The rare and unique Gray’s lily. Lilium grayi, rewards the persistent searcher with its dainty reddish-orange nodding flowers, and the fragrant Carolina lily, L. carolinianum, scents the mountain air with its elusive perfume. Mountain silver-bell, Haksia monticola, with its thousands of little hanging bell-like flowers, reaches 00 or 100 feet into the sky, while chestnuts, red maples, buckeyes, black cherries, hemlocks (Canada and Carolina), red spruces, yellow birches and tulip-trees here become giants of their kind.
In July and August mountain stewartia, S. ovata, proudly displays its lovely three-inch, cup-shaped camellia-like flowers, and the sour-wood, Oxydendrum arboreum, flaunts its arched panicles of tiny blooms; with the coming of cold weather they compete with an army of other plants in a parade of brilliant and varied Autumn coloring that is unexcelled anywhere in the world. In rocky crevices on the high mountain cliffs and slopes is found the Allegheny sand-myrtle, Leiophyllum buxifolium proatratum, with its myriads of tiny star-like flowers seemingly unaffected by the fierce Spring winds that whirl about them; they seem to clothe the ledges with scarves of snow.
